The Women’s Independence Scholarship Program, Inc.
The Women's Independence Scholarship Program, Inc. began as a program of The Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF) in 1999 and since then has provided scholarships to over 2,000 women survivors of intimate partner abuse. In December 2007, SLF Founder and President, Doris Buffett announced her intention to endow WISP as an independent entity and on July 1 WISP, Inc. emerged as a "sister" organization.
The mission of WISP, Inc. is to enhance efforts to end domestic violence by offering access to higher education. Doris Buffett is the sister of Warren Buffett, and President and Founder of The Sunshine Lady Foundation, Inc. Doris is passionate about her responsibilities as a philanthropist, and is quick to credit her brother and father for their inspirational examples of integrity and generosity and the guiding principles their wisdom provided. Both The Sunshine Lady Foundation and WISP, Inc. are wholly funded through her generosity.
The primary programs of WISP, Inc. are the Women's Independence Scholarship Program (WISP) and the Counselor, Advocate and Support Staff (CASS) scholarship. Since its inception in 1999 the Women's Independence Scholarship Program has awarded more than million in scholarships.
