NNEDV Partners with Local Group for 2nd Annual 5K
August 13, 2012
NNEDV is partnering with No Woman, No Cry again in 2012 to host the 2nd annual No Woman, No Cry 5K in memory of Jenny Vaughn Bates. In 2011, the first-year event raised nearly $20,000 to benefit both NNEDV and the Jenny Vaughn Bates Memorial Trust Fund.
In the summer of 2010, Jenny Vaughn Bates left her husband following five years of physical, emotional and verbal abuse. Her friends, family and colleagues were stunned to learn of the abuse that she had been experiencing behind closed doors, and they rallied around her. But they did not know that the abuse had already escalated to an extremely dangerous level. On September 18, 2010, Jenny's estranged husband abducted her from her home and shot her in the head as she tried to escape. He then turned the gun on himself, leaving their two sons behind.
Those who were closest to Jenny knew that she would want her death to have a purpose, so they created the No Woman, No Cry 5K to honor her strength and celebrate her life every year on the anniversary of her tragic and untimely death.
We hope you will join them and NNEDV in taking a stand against domestic violence and remembering their vibrant, confident and caring friend, Jenny.
